Samford in Germany
June 7 - July 7, 2018
Place: Sprachinstitut Treffpunkt, Bamberg, Germany
The “Samford in Germany” summer language program takes place in Bamberg, Germany. Bamberg is a historic center of Christian life, and the most significant of its churches is the 12th century cathedral which contains one of the finest works of High Medieval art, the Bamberger Reiter. The city itself was founded in the year 1007, and boasts a number of historic sites of interest, including a vast underground network of catacombs. The oldest catacombs have existed for over 500 years and have served variously as underground beer warehouses and bomb shelters during the Second World War. The surrounding country is dense with historical sites, castles and exciting outdoor opportunities for excursions, hiking and rafting.
Sprachinstitut Treffpunkt, our partner institute, is situated in the center of the ancient church and university town and has a working relationship with Bamberg university’s notable institute devoted to the pedagogy of teaching German as a second language. The privately-owned language institute offers elementary, intermediate and advanced language classes. Students with no experience in German can expect to gain basic proficiency. Students with previous experience in German will take a placement test and will be assigned classes based on their oral and written proficiency. The classes at Sprachinstitut Treffpunkt are small, usually 6 to 8 students, which facilitates individual attention. In addition, students are given a test every two weeks.
While in Bamberg, students will be assigned to families. These families have been carefully selected based on a number of criteria to assure that the family stay will maximize the students’ opportunity for rapid proficiency growth in spoken German and their familiarity with the German culture. Students will eat breakfast with the family each day, and will also share three other meals per week with the family.
