Program Description:
The richness of the English language can be discovered in the examination and exploration of the dialects that have evolved over time.  Students will discover and experience “the English language”.  As observed by Ralph Waldo Emerson, the English language “is the sea which receives tributaries from every region under Heaven.”  The form and expression of the English language has been shaped by historical events, governments, geographical regions, and everyday people.  This course will include extensive field observations across several dialect regions of England as well as a broad range of cultural venues that will highlight the many varieties and dialects of the English language.  Recommended to be taken concurrently with “A Common Language Divided by an Ocean: Syntax, Semantics & Pragmatics.”
